Porphyria is a rare blood disorder that is difficult to diagnose. It has variant forms that have yet to be discovered. This is a blog of my adventures in the life of what some doctors are sure is Porphyria and what others have no clue. Welcome to my world!

The Many Colors of Urine....Someone, PLEASE, tell me what this is
How many times does a person stop to think about the color of pee?
Life in my house seems to revolve around the color of our pee. I am sure that is crazy to the average person but none the less that is how this family functions. You first have to understand that the color determines what kind of day we are going to have. Is it going to be an fun, care free day or is it going to be filled with emotional upheaval and off the wall symptoms? The color of the crystal pee will tell us. If it changes color, hold on to you hat because it is going to be a rough ride!
Hi to all of you visitors : ) My name is Rene' and I am blessed with what some doctors declare is Acute Intermittent Porphyria but unfortunately the tests say otherwise. It also tests negative for PKU, Alkaptonuria, Myoglobinuria, Hemoglobinuria, Kryptopyrroles, Lupus and Cancer. So on goes the quest to try to figure out what it is. COME ON TEXAS A & M MEDICAL STUDENTS!!!!!! I have faith in you Aggies so please don't let me down!
My adventures started over 15 years ago when the doctors thought I had cancer. This was because I got a simple little scratch on my hand. You may be thinking big deal as I would but.... the scratch caused the lymph node in my arm pit to swell up like a golf ball. The first doctor said it was an ingrown hair. I promptly asked my sons nurse practitioner if she believed it was an ingrown hair. She sent me to a different doctor who began testing me for breast cancer and lupus and put me on antibiotics for an infection. All is better for a while.
A couple of years go by and again I have problems with a lymph node. This one was in my neck. Again I was tested for cancer and lupus. Again my results are negative and I get better for a while. 15 years of being tested for lupus with negative results. I ask this, Why can a doctor say he doesn't care what the tests say, I have lupus but when it comes to Porphyria he says the test is negative? Isn't that kind of hypocritical?
This is a picture of my one of my sons pee. It is the same pee. The bottle on the left was placed in the sun and the bottle on the right was kept in the dark. Symptoms are mental changes, photosensitivity and urine color change. The urine only changes color when exposed to sunlight. It does not change just upon standing. It is not anything we eat or drink either. This attack was caused by minocycline. The urine cleared up when he was taken off the minocycline. I am open to any suggestions......
